Senatore
The winery
The winery is well over 100 years old and is now at the fourth generation. The winery’s production methods, in agriculture as well as in wine production, have changed over decades, but their philosophy based on a natural and organic approach has not changed. In fact, all Senatore wines are today fully certified organic. Moreover, they use almost half of the amount of sulfites that is permitted by the specifications for organic wines. This goal is achieved also thanks to the adoption of cryoprecipitation as a technology to stabilize wine. In addition, cryoprecipitation avoids formation and precipitation of crystals, that often occurs due to shaking or thermic stress, and to avoids losing the organoleptic properties of the wine when long shipping distances must be covered.
Story
At the end of 1800, the great-great-grandfather Giuseppe Sculco and then the great-grandfather Francesco Senatore, had dedicated their lives to the wine sector establishing the winery located in "Corfu Vecchiu". Subsequently, the grandfather Antonio, who took over the management of the winery from the 30s of last century, expanded and gave a great impulse to the company, planting most of the vineyards that still represent the green heart of the winemaking tradition of the family. Together with his brother Raffaele, he also built the old stone-cellar in "Corfu Novu", which represented for about half a century the heart of the winery, with a stowage capacity of about 2000 hectoliters.
The Estate
The 30 hectares of vineyards are located in Ciro’ Marina in front of the Ionic Sea, benefitting the Mediterranean dry and hot climate, on a soil with a medium clayey-calcareous mixed composition. Here Senatore family grows a variety of different grapevines for red wines, such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gaglioppo, Nerello Calabrese, and a variety of grapevines for white wines, such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Incrocio Manzoni, Greco bianco and Traminer, vinified in blend or in purity, providing an exceptional range of flavors for your tasting experience.
The Cellar
This winery produces overall about 250.000 bottles divided in 14 labels, some of which produced in very small quantities for selected customers. From their selection, Bottega Vini has chosen for the Japanese market 4 wines that best represent this region and the Senatore winery. Three of these wines are obtained from Gaglioppo grapevine vinified in different manners: a fruity Ciro’ Rose’ (Puntalice), a light bodied Ciro’ Red (Arcano) and a more structured Ciro’ Reserve (Arcano Riserva). The fourth wine is a full-bodied Merlot grown in the Mediterranean climate and aged in barrels, resulting in a wonderful tasting experience.
