Duca di Montalbo
APPELLATION: Protected geographical indication (IGP)
GRAPE VARIETY: Nero d’Avola, Nero Cappuccio
Duca di Montalbo is Milazzo’s most precious red wine. Only the best harvests, using the oldest vineyards, with over 50 years of life and with the lowest density, become Duca di Montalbo. The Cru is decisive: the Montalbo district is characterized by a 100% calcareous marl, a "lunar" soil surprisingly suitable for red wines undergoing long aging.
The bunches are selected on the plant and harvested by hand in small 14 kg boxes. Then bunches are de-stemmed and transferred to vertical vinificators where the grape must undergo a long maceration on the skins until the pomace is completely lowered with frequent pumping over for an optimal extraction of grapes’ fragrances. The malolactic fermentation is carried out in small oak barriques for the Nero d'Avola and in large barrels for the Nero Cappuccio. Refinement takes place for 48 months in barriques and large barrels, followed by a period in steel tanks and finally in the bottle.
This is a wine having an intense red color with purple reflections. On the nose it is fresh and elegant, with initial hints of fresh red fruits, where blackberry, raspberry and plum stand out, followed by spicy notes, aromatic vegetable, such as rosemary and thyme. On the palate it is powerful and structured, rich in tannins of exceptional quality, silky and elegant. Full-bodied and fresh at the same time it reveals a great gustatory persistence.
