Cascina Ca' Nova
The winery
This winery is dedicated to valorizing local grapevines, such as Nebbiolo, Erbaluce and Vespolina, used to produce higher quality wines. The philosophy of the winery is to produce wines paying great attention to naturally growing high quality grapes in proprietary vineyards and great care to winemaking. The vineyards are managed almost entirely manually and respectfully of nature. No chemical weeding or treatments are used, but they practice green manure, fertilization with microelements and treatments with natural products.
Story
About 300 million years ago a volcan (known as Valsesia's Supervulcano) exploded erupting an immense amount of material, up to 30 km deep, that formed the Novara hills, subsequently covered by a deposit of moraine materials derived from the melting of glaciers. This is the exclusive soil composition of this region. Right in this territory, in Bogogno, Giada Codecasa and her father Vittorio decided in 1996 to acquire an old farmhouse, the cascina Ca’Nova, and to plant their first vineyard, believing in the enormous potential of this terroir. In a few years they planted nearly 9 hectares of vineyards and built a modern winery. This is how a father and daughter dream started and became solid and qualitative reality.
The Estate
The 9 hectares of proprietary vineyards are divided into three different vineyards, each chosen for the peculiar characteristics of the soil and exposure to the sun. The golf vineyard was planted in 1996 around the farmhouse “cascina Cà Nova”, among the holes of the golf course that gives it its name. Nearby, on a small hill facing south, next to the remains of the ancient Romanesque church called San Quirico (giving the name to the wine) dominating the vineyard, grows their precious nebbiolo cru. On a large and sunny hill close to the village of Ghemme lies the main vineyard of 5 hectares that provides the grapes for the prestigious Ghemme Docg wine.
The Cellar
Technology and Tradition, these are the two words describing Ca’Nova wine making style. Beside the vinification area, with stainless steel vats in controlled temperature, is located the aging area with large barrels of French oak. Bottling of the about 45.000 bottles produced is done twice in the year. Thereafter, bottles are placed to rest until they are sold, that, for aged wines, happens after many years.
