The winery
The winery is still run by the three original families that gave birth to this winery, with Mr Caruso being the CEO, Mr Alagna the Head of Marketing and Sales, and Mr Angileri the oenologist, supported by Pasquale Papiro. Their philosophy in agriculture is to use natural products, such as sulfur and copper, to protect the grapes from diseases, being strongly supported by the dry and sunny nature of the climate in this region. Organic fertilizations with manure is used to provide nutrition to the plants.
Story
A winery that was born in the early 1800s, or rather ... 3 wineries belonging to three families: Alagna, Caruso, Angileri. These three families owned beautiful vineyards in Marsala and its surroundings. It was the time when Marsala wine, thanks to the British merchants Woodhouse, Whitaker and Ingham, was produced and sold to United Kingdom in large quantities. The British merchant understood in fact that the region around Marsala had a great potential to produce high quality fortified wines similar to the Portuguese (Porto and Madeira) and Spanish (Sherry) ones. These three families from the town of Marsala started and grew a good business producing the Marsala wine, fortified with alcohol to be shipped, using entire cargo boats, to UK. Unusually for Sicily, the 3 families, who in the meantime became relative due to several marriages, decided in 1970 to bring their business together by establishing a Farming Cooperative. But still the general organization of the business was not optimal as there were still 3 distinct wineries. In 1996 they took the final step by closing the Farming Cooperative and acquiring a large winery in the center of the town of Marsala, the Vinci winery. The new Company was created under the brand name of "Cantine Vinci", which is still the current name for their business.
The Estate
The about 100 hectares of vineyards extend from the seaside up to the hills at 450 mt around the town of Marsala (Trapani province, west Sicily). Soil has different composition according to the site and based on the characteristics of the soil the most suitable varieties of grapevine have been planted. Of the approx. 100 hectares, about 60% are cultivated for red wines, such as Nero d'Avola, Syrah, Merlot and Perricone, the rest are cultivated for white wines, such as Grillo, Catarratto and Zibibbo. Regarding the latter variety Cantine Vinci is proud of having been among the first to plant them on Sicilian mainland, outside the small island of Pantelleria.
The Cellar
This winery produces 7 table wines with and without denominations, 6 dessert wines, 3 aromatized wines, greatly appreciated in Italy and abroad, 5 wines for catholic mass, several varieties of Marsala Dolce and Marsala Vergine, largely sold to the food industry. From their selection, Bottega Vini has chosen for the Japanese wine lovers 5 wines: a fruity and aromatic Zibibbo secco (Calicanto), an intense and full bodied Nero d’Avola (Lithos), an aromatic and inebriant Zibibbo dolce (Villa Moresca Zibibbo) and two of their most representative Marsala wines, the sweet and popular Marsala Garibaldi, the most appreciated wine by Giuseppe Garibaldi (the Hero of Two Worlds), and the more sophisticated Marsala Vergine, produced according to the Soleras Method.
